Karen Lee Andrews, Far From Paradise

Far From Paradise

Capitalising on her powerhouse voice and soulful sound, the new EP mines the rich blues and soul at the heart of her musical heritage.

“The sound is new, yet familiar,” says Karen Lee Andrews, who has focused on reconnecting with her roots since stepping away from touring in 2015. Picking up her guitar in the Summer of 2016 was the catalyst for this fresh new sound.

This new genre-defining EP, ‘Far from Paradise’ is by turns direct, nuanced and open, to keep the listener fully engaged. The roots of the sound are gritty guitar, glowing valves, lush tremolo and deep reverb in a distinctively fluid expression. This unique sound carries the mood and tones of the EP expressed in rich, warm vocals.

Dirty Soul Album, Australian Soul Music

Dirty Soul

The album was recorded live at REC Studios in Sydney boasting an authentic, bombastic vibrancy which only a live recording can achieve.

Heartache, honesty, strength and conviction are felt through every vocal tone. After a childhood spent listening to her local church's gospel music and, later, Motown records, her raw, powerhouse voice is undeniably one that cannot be taught.

It caught the attention of highly respected troubadour and national treasure Paul Kelly, who gave away two of his self-written songs, "Rising Moon" and "Sure Got Me," for the chanteuse to record. Ms Murphy was able to put her own spin on these tracks, which are rendered in the same 60s soul style as the rest of the album.

Stride EP - Neo Soul Music, Australian

Ms Murphy returned to the studio in mid-2014 to begin work on ‘Stride’, partnering with ARIA award-winning producer Jan Skubizsewski (CatEmpire, Phrase, ILLY).

“These new tracks are hopeful and speak of overcoming times in my life when I have been tried and tested,” Ms Murphy explains. “The lyrics revolve around loss, which I’ve learnt leads us to find out how strong we actually are. Life experiences that are isolating are the very thing that connects us all.

With the imminent release of ‘Stride’, audiences are set to experience more from the dynamic performer on tour throughout late 2014. Dates include Australia’s first ever SoulFest, alongside Grammy award-winning neo-soul, jazz and hip-hop icons Maxwell, D’Angelo and Common. The Love Tribe, as Ms Murphy’s fans are affectionately known, is set to expand, as she delivers her world-class soulful style alongside her contemporaries, making her mark and taking it all in her stride, as only she can

White Dress and the Spirit - Australian Soul Singer

White Dress and the Spirit

It takes a special set of circumstances to create a knockout soul singer. It requires near impossible circumstances to uncover one. Ms Murphy – the fiery and heartbreaking stage persona of Karen Andrews – knows firsthand what those circumstances entail. From her childhood kicking around a housing commission outside Sydney to the flashbulbs of primetime on The Voice, it’s been a long and arduous road to her introduction to the nation. It’s clear in the celebratory brass tones of Ms Murphy’s debut single, ‘Ritual Union,’ and in the song’s first vocal notes, deep as a river yet calling to the heavens
